Norfolk Preparing for Navy Warfare Development Command

Naval Station Norfolk is preparing for Navy Warfare Development Command's relocation from Newport, R.I. to Norfolk with the construction of a new administrative building.

The approximately 88,900 square foot building consists of executive and administrative office space with a secure lobby and quarterdeck, a flag suite, auditorium, technical library, maritime battle center lab, sensitive compartmented information area, simulation equipment storage, high bay space for a modeling and simulation laboratory, concept research laboratory, Navy-Marine Corps Intranet equipment space, and locker rooms.

The project also includes construction of two parking lots for command members. When completed, the building will be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certified.

Building construction is scheduled for completion in October with building occupancy scheduled for early April of 2010 after several months of furniture and equipment installation.

This design and build project is valued at approximately $26 million. It was awarded in September 2007, and the prime contractor is Tesoro Corporation of Virginia Beach, Va.

The Navy Warfare Development Center provides concepts and doctrine analysis and is the maritime battle center for the Navy. It will relocate to Norfolk as part of a Base Realignment and Closure decision.

As an integral part of the NAVFAC enterprise, NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic manages the planning, design and construction of shore facilities for the U.S. Navy from Maine to North Carolina.
